What Is Goal Setting?
According to Cambridge Dictionary, goal setting is "the process of deciding what you want to achieve or what you want someone else to achieve over a particular period.”
Although as James Clear, the best-selling author of Atomic Habits, argues that it is now enough to know what you want to achieve.
Because currently, everybody wants to achieve something in their lives, but as he mentioned in one of his blog posts:
“Rather than considering what kind of success we want, we should ask, What kind of pain do I want?”
In other words, before we consider a goal, we should count the sacrifices and the process that goes with it.
As he goes on to say, "goal setting is not only about choosing the rewards you want to enjoy, but also the costs you are willing to pay."
I encourage you to read his blog post, for he goes into depth about what goal setting truly is about.
He also talks a lot about systems and how they can effectively help us achieve our objectives, goal setting is not enough, we have to have a system in place.
Objectives can be helpful in providing a sense of direction, but it's implementing systems that really move the needle.
In fact, the main advantage of having an objective is that it helps you identify the appropriate system that you need to establish.
Nonetheless, it's the system itself that is responsible for producing the desired outcomes.
I encourage you to read his post and learn in-depth about goal setting, its meaning and how it works, and how to implement it and come back to learn about the biblical principles of goal setting.
Although I value your time, I don't want to keep you for long, so let's just get right into the principles, shall we?
5 Biblical Principles For Setting Up Your Goal More Effectively (According To Your Creator)
Principle #1 Seek God's Will For Your Life
Our top priority should be seeking God's will before we set any goals. The Word of God teaches us that while we have limited understanding, God is infinitely wise.
Apostle Paul stated, "For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" (Romans 11:34).
King David was also aware of how crucial it was to set goals in accordance with God's will. He stated, "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act."
in Psalm 37:5. David understood that while prudent thought and action were important, success and fulfillment would ultimately result from God's perfect will.
We surrender ourselves to God's infinite wisdom and guidance when we seek His will in establishing our goals.
We may have faith that He is aware of what is best for us and that His purposes are good (Jeremiah 29:11).
This does not mean that we shouldn't make decisions or take action, only that we should do so with the understanding that God's ways are superior to ours (Isaiah 55:8-9).
So how can we make goals while seeking God's will? Prayer and asking directly God for guidance.
We can also read the Word of God and ask other believers for insight and directions.
As we create our action plans, we can check them against God's Word and make adjustments as needed to ensure they align with His will.
But before setting up a goal, you should seek God to reveal to you the purpose and vision He has for you.
God has already prepared some tables for you and has doors ready to be opened. As for us Kingdom citizens, our primary goal is to share the vision, will, and desires of our Creator.
Therefore, I encourage you before you make a plan for your life or for a particular thing, to pray for guidance and His intake on that particular goal.
Here are some questions you could ask yourself, before deciding on a plan and a goal:
Does this particular goal or plan that I am about to put on paper align with God's will for my life? And it is important to ask yourself and God this question, because even if the plan and goal may be biblical and good, they may not be the right fit for you. As the saying goes: " good is always the enemy of the best," and what is good for you is the enemy of what is right for you. You may have many good ideas and plans with good intentions, and even with the intention to expand the Kingdom, but if they are not in alignment with the plans God has for you, they may become a burden rather than freedom and fulfillment.
Do my aspirations align with or go against God's values and principles?
Are my plans and desires for my own self-ambitions? For example, you might want financial freedom, but for what purpose, for the benefit of others or yours? If you only think about your own benefit and win, this is definitely not from God! Always when you are setting up a goal, you should consider the win/win principle: Something that will be a benefit for you and of great fulfillment and joy, as well for others. Because that goal should be of service to others, and they should find fulfillment in it.
By seeking God's will in our goal setting, we can trust that our goals are aligned with His purpose for our lives.
We can move forward with confidence, knowing that He is leading us toward success and fulfillment
Principle #2 Estimate The Cost
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” Luke 14: 28
As I said at the beginning of this post when defining the meaning of goal setting and as James Clear, himself wrote in his blog post, rather than focusing on the success and achievement you want for your life, consider the cost first.
Are you up for the journey ahead, even if it means enduring some difficult and occasionally tedious moments along the way?
Remember, while chasing a dream can be exciting and rewarding, success is rarely a smooth ride.
It often involves facing uphill challenges and overcoming obstacles, with the potential for setbacks and slip-ups.
When I was in elementary school, I had to walk a long distance to catch the school bus every morning and after school.
The route included a steep slope that led up to my house. One winter day, the road and slope were covered in ice and snow, making it nearly impossible to climb up. I slipped and fell repeatedly, and ended up crawling on all fours to make it home.
This experience taught me that success is not a straightforward path and that achieving our goals often requires sacrifice and hard work.
We may think that success is easy and will come naturally, but the truth is that it's a process with many challenges along the way.
Before we set out to accomplish our goals, it's important to assess the costs and prepare ourselves for the obstacles that may arise.
With determination and perseverance, however, we can overcome any challenge and achieve our dreams.
Principle #3 Set Specific Goals According To God's Will
We may advance with clarity and focus when we set specific goals that line up with God's plan and purpose. We are aware of our goals and are able to track our progress.
The apostle Paul is a great example of someone who set specific goals that aligned with God's purpose for his life.
In Philippians 3:13-14, he wrote, "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
Paul worked diligently to achieve the right goals in his life because he had a clear understanding of the concept of goals.
He understood that his overall purpose was to expand God's kingdom and glorify God through his faithful service.
Through establishing churches, sharing the gospel, and writing letters to other Believers, Paul established precise objectives to accomplish this.
Other biblical examples of particular aims include King David's desire to construct the temple (1 Chronicles 22:7-8) and Nehemiah's desire to restore the city's walls (Nehemiah 2:17-18).
Both men encountered difficult situations and obstacles along the way, but they remained committed to their specific goals and eventually succeeded in achieving them through hard work and perseverance.
We can rely on God to guide us and give us the resources to accomplish our objectives when we establish them in line with God's purpose for our lives.
As Psalm 37:4 says, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."
We may enjoy the happiness and fulfillment that comes from knowing we are living out God's purpose for our life by defining clear objectives and pursuing them with faith and perseverance.
Principle #4 Take Massive Action
Setting concrete goals is a crucial first step, but without taking action to achieve them, they are just dreams.
Our dreams become reality when we take action to make them a reality. Nonetheless, it requires self-control, strategic planning, and the willingness to take key decisions.
Many instances of people who took action to accomplish their aspirations may be found throughout the Bible.
For instance, Nehemiah encountered difficulties and criticism when repairing the walls of Jerusalem.
Nevertheless, he had a well-thought-out strategy, prayed for direction, and persistently pursued his purpose.
He sought help from others and persevered through adversity to accomplish his goals.
We must be intentional and disciplined in our planning process. Setting priorities, breaking down our goals into manageable chunks, and developing a schedule for finishing each task are all part of this process.
It also means being flexible and willing to make required adjustments along the way.
The spiritual discipline of taking action requires confidence and trust in God's provision and direction.
As Proverbs 16:9 says, "In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."
We show dedication to fulfilling God's plan for our lives by taking massive action toward our goals.
We mature into faithful servants eager to go above and beyond in order to fulfill the responsibilities that God has given to us.
We may attain our goals and feel the joy and fulfillment that come from fulfilling God's purpose for our life by praying over our plans and putting them into action.
Let's seek to accomplish the objectives that are in line with God's plan by obediently following His guidance.
Principle #5 Persevere And Trust In The Process
According to what the Bible teaches, perseverance bears much fruit and glorifies God.
In reality, by enduring the cross in order to complete one of the most important things in human history, the Lord Jesus Himself gave the best example of perseverance.
The Proverbs book serves as a reminder that the Lord determines a person's steps, and that when we entrust our goals to Him, He will make our pathways straight.
This means that even when we face difficulties, we may have faith that God will be there to help us get through them.
Other examples of perseverance in the Bible include Esther, who risked her life to save her people.
She was a faithful servant of God and persevered through difficult situations because she recognized the urgent need and importance of her goals.
We must remember that perseverance is not just about pushing through hardships, but also about staying faithful to God's will and purpose for our lives.
By doing so, we can bring glory to Him and experience the joy and fulfillment that comes with achieving our God-given goals.
Bonus Principle: Give Glory to God For Literally Everything
Giving God glory is one of the most crucial parts of reaching our goals. We must constantly remember that our skills and triumphs are gifts from God, and we can only achieve great things through His grace.
While we strive toward our objectives, it is critical that we keep God at the forefront of our minds and give Him credit for our successes.
There are several examples in the Bible of people who gave God credit for their successes.
One such example is Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers yet ascended to become Egypt's second-in-command to Pharaoh.
When his brothers came to him for help, Joseph realized that God had given him the ability to interpret dreams and exalted him to this position of authority.
Similarly, the apostle Paul, who produced most of the New Testament, constantly credited his success to God.
In Philippians 4:13, he famously proclaimed, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
He knew that he could only do the essential things he did because of God's power and direction.
When we achieve our goals, it can be tempting to take all the credit for ourselves. But we must remember that it is God who gives us the strength, wisdom, and resources to succeed.
By giving glory to God for our achievements, we are acknowledging His role in our lives and showing our gratitude for His blessings.
In the book of Proverbs, it says, "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established" (Proverbs 16:3).
When we commit our goals and plans to God, we invite Him to be a part of our journey and work with us to bring about His purposes.
By doing so, we can have confidence that we are on the right path and that our efforts are aligned with God's will.
